Hyundai Rotem

Transdev Wellington has sub-contracted Hyundai Rotem to perform the maintenance function of the Matangi EMU units. Hyundai Rotem manufacture these units in South Korea so this partnership is well poised to offer the best in class operational and maintenance performance for Wellington’s rail customers.

Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean company, is part of the Hyundai Motor Group and has been engaged in key national industries such as railways, defence and plant and machinery facilities since 1977.

As well as the Matangi EMU units currently in use here in Wellington, Hyundai Rotem also manufacture a variety of different railway vehicles including high speed trains, light rail vehicles, DMUs, locomotives, and passenger coaches and freight trains. They supply these vehicles to 35 countries around the world and employ over 3000 people world-wide.

Hyundai Rotem has also maintained approximately 2,500 rail vehicles around the globe over the past 10 years. Hyundai Rotem aims to leverage this global experience with the knowledge and competencies as the Matangi fleet manufacturer to deliver the maintenance services here in Wellington.

Transdev and Hyundai Rotem currently operate as partners to successfully integrate operations and maintenance for Seoul Metro Line 9. Line 9 has recorded year-on-year patronage growth since operations started in 2009. In 2013, it recorded almost 8% passenger growth and 10.5% fare revenue growth of approximately $84 million – while customer satisfaction results are consistently high.

As maintenance sub-contractor to Transdev Wellington, Hyundai Rotem and Transdev will operate under a one company policy meaning that all standards, policies and values will be consistent across the operations and maintenance depots.
