A Message from Transdev Wellington regarding the RMTU strike action

We are sorry if your travel plans have been disrupted by the Rail & Maritime Transport Union (RMTU) strike action. We ask for your understanding during this time and would like to reassure you that we are doing everything we can do to prevent any further disruptions to our services.

The reason for the strike

The current strike action is centred on the RMTU’s ability to hold meetings that disrupt our services and customers which is something we have been working hard to avoid.  We have offered the RMTU a paid stop meeting so passengers wouldn’t be affected, but unfortunately the RMTU have chosen to go ahead with the strike and are refusing mediation and further negotiation at this stage.

The RMTU have stated that the strike is because Transdev are attempting to erode staff terms and conditions.  This was a surprise to us as we have accepted all of the RMTU claims to date. We believe our own claims are of a benefit to all our people who will be better off overall as a result of the package we’ve tabled. 

One key feature of our claims is working out how we can move staff so there are more on busy services and fewer on trains that are empty – something that our people themselves have asked for. 

While we respect our employees’ decision we are disappointed the RMTU has chosen to strike. We will continue to negotiate in good faith and believe a solution to avoid further disruption can be found.
