Swapping freight for passengers

Last week Steve McIver became the latest Transdev Locomotive Engineer to be signed off.

After spending the last 5 years driving freight in Whangarei it was his family which includes young grandchildren that drew him back to the Kapiti Coast.

Steve has been driving on New Zealand railways since 1982 so brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Transdev.

Beginning his career in Christchurch before working in Ashburton, he had covered most sections of track in the South Island before moving North and working on the Wellington Metro in 2001 and 2002, as well as multiple other locations around the country.

“It was great to be welcomed back by some old faces who I worked with when I was here 20 years ago”

He credits the great team of trainers and tutors for what was intensive training which is evident in the number of highly trained Transdev staff out on the network.

When asked what his favourite line to drive on was the response was quite different to most although understandable after years of driving freight.

“Melling Line, because it’s nice and short compared to Whangarei”

Steve is excited to be back on the Wellington network and is looking forward to more family time as well as being a part of a great working environment here at Transdev.
