Wellingtons latest LE graduate ready to get to work

Jaspinder Singh is the latest to graduate as Locomotive Engineer. After starting in the railways as a Passenger Operator, he progressed to Train Manager, and then to Train Examiner (TXO), he persevered with the testing phase and reached his goal of becoming an LE.

“I didn’t get through the testing the first time I tried, but I did on my third attempt. Having a different cultural background and English as a second language made it more challenging, but I persisted and it paid off.” He encourages others to give it a go and keep trying even if they don’t pass the first time.

Whilst most drivers on the Wellington network will say their favourite line to drive is the Kapiti Line, Jaspinder enjoys the Hutt Valley line. “That is where I was first introduced to Wellington when I moved to NZ from India in 2005. Jaspinder has lived throughout the Hutt Valley since then and now resides in Melling which he says is great as his wife can easily walk around with their two young preschool children.

Three others were in the training school with Jaspinder, another internal and two external. “I enjoyed learning together in the class room, helping each other and sharing information and experiences.”

It was his father’s dream for him to become an engineer so you can imagine how proud he is now that Jaspinder has been signed off and officially become a Locomotive Engineer.
